Green Drinks is back for 2025!
We're launching our 2025 Green Drinks on Thursday 13 February at 4.45pm for 5pm at Small Change Espresso Nambour with guest presenter Dr Helen Rosenbaum
Do you know right now companies hold seabed mining exploration licences over millions of square km of deep ocean floor? An environment many scientists say we know less about than the surface of the moon, the deep sea covers most of our planet, yet the species inhabiting it remain a mystery to science. Commercial Deep Sea Mining (DSM) is yet to occur. We have an ever-narrowing window to shut this industry down before it starts.
Dr. Helen Rosenbaum is co-founder of the Deep Sea Mining Campaign (DSMC) and its Research Coordinator. Helen holds a doctorate in Medical Science, has worked as a marine toxicologist and in the development of coastal zone policy in Australia. She also has 30 years’ experience in environmental and human rights advocacy and in community development in the Pacific region. Over the past 12 years the DSMC has undertaken science based advocacy in solidarity with civil society organisations, scientists and citizens around the world who are concerned about the likely impacts of deep sea mining on ecosystems and island and coastal communities. We have produced several evidence based reports and the video Blue Peril presents for the first time the results of modelling independent of mining companies showing the spread of pollution and the extent of seafloor destruction for actual exploration licence areas in the Pacific Ocean
